about
The idea for this piece came from thinking about the nature of semantic identity (the meaning ascribed by a "name"), speech, and perception of frequency and resonance ("sound"), which all exist in a similarly liminal, aleatoric space of human understanding. Inspired by this, I wanted to create a deconstructive work that could encapsulate the ineffability of these perceptual facets of language, frequency, and resonance in the most minimal form possible. I recorded myself speaking the words, "Ferdinando Maria Meinrado Francesco Pascale Rosario Carulli," with each syllable spaced evenly, over the course of a minute. I then time-stretched this to play back at approximately 60 times slower than real time, so that while every syllable, sibilance, resonance and inflection of my speech that constructs Ferdinando Maria Meinrado Francesco Pascale Rosario Carulli's name is present, it is impossible to perceive the meaning of the sum of these aural happenings as a collective name or identity. I then vocoded a copy of the audio to a sine wave, which slowly arpeggiates a C Major triad over the duration of the piece. In the piece, both the original time-stretched audio and the vocoded audio play back side by side. The piece lasts 1 hour. To experience a performance of the piece, you will need to use either headphones or a stereo speaker system in a comfortable space. The actual performance of the piece does not necessarily occur in the action responsible for the production of each sound, but more so in the listener's unique perception of the psychoacoustic interactions - aural happenings, if you will - between each sound, frequency, or resonance that occurs throughout the duration of Ferdinando Maria Meinrado Francesco Pascale Rosario Carulli's name.
